PRAISE FOR MATT'S DEBUT NOVEL - DEAD MEN'S DUST

Review by Alex Gordon -Peterborough Evening Telegraph

WHEN a major publisher gives a new novelist a record-breaking five-book deal you can bet they think they are onto something good.

And they certainly are. If you’re looking out for a new hero with muscle and deadly skills then Joe Hunter is your man.

It’s the most explosive debut I’ve read since Lee Child’s modern day knight in tarnished armour, Jack Reacher, arrived in Killing Floor.

Hunter is ex-military, he’s worked with special forces and the CIA despite being British, and now he’s a freelance security expert, although some might call him a vigilante. He’s as competent with his fists as he is with a gun and he’s a force for good when bad guys think they can use terror to intimidate the innocent.

His first mission takes him to the seedier side of California because his errant stepbrother John has got himself into hot water with a mob who want him to pay off his debts by sucking him into their counterfeiting operation.

That would be bad enough, but John has also crossed the path of a crazy serial killer. None of them know what’s hit them when Hunter arrives with deadly force, but it finally explodes in a teeth-rattling, jaw-dropping, chamber of horrors beneath the Mojave desert.

It’s breathless, page-ripping stuff - and Hunter will be back.

Review by Alex Gordon

I'm about twenty pages shy of finishing Dead Men’s Dust and I’m loving it.
It’s about a thousand times better than I expected from past dabbles in the genre. Joe is a complex three dimensional character and the way Hilton explores the subtle but crucial differences between a sociopathic killer who has killed many with pleasure and a conscience ridden soldier who has killed even more but with a troubled moral self is nuanced and insightful in a way that belies the brief brutal bursts of “Bourne...” movie violence that punctuate the book.
I can’t imagine someone could read a book in this genre after reading this and not find “Dead Men’s Dust” a superior book in every important way.

'A dose of pure rocket fuel. Starts fast, gets faster, and doesn't quit right through to the slam bang finale. Dead Men's Dust is as enjoyable a thriller as you will read this year, and I do mean "Thriller!" My ears are still ringing with gunfire! I loved this book.'

"Taut, thrilling, tense and sometimes scary - it's hard to talk about Dead Men's Dust without sounding like a caricature. But it delivers all those things. And clearly was written with passion and backed up by real experience of some of the darker sides of life. Loved it."

Quote: Joe Hunter in Dead Men’s Dust

‘Pain and fear transcend everything, and know no boundaries. It doesn’t matter where you are. You could be in any metropolis in the world - New York, London, Paris, Moscow - and the parallels would remain consistent. There are differences in culture, in law, in language, but at its base level, civilization shares one undeniable truth: the scream of a victim sounds the same the world over.’
